Samia is about fighting. It is about the fact that no major hanges or improvements have occurred in the history of humanity without a preceding struggle: for the abolition of slavery, for universal suffrage, for employees’ rights, for female equality… For all these things which we in the West regard as naturally right, people went out into the streets, raised their voices and even gave their lives.
Samia's casting is now open.
Samia will tell the turbulent life story of Samia Yusuf Omar, a young girl from Somalia who represented her country at the 2008 Olympic Games in Peking, aged just 17. Raised in a country torn by civil war and terror, Samia struggles not only with violence, chaos and poverty. Her life and that of her family is oppressed and threatened by Islamist extremists, whose perfidious grip steadily tightens. All assertive, independent women are a thorn in their flesh. But Samia does not let them intimidate her. She fights on to realize her dream of becoming an Olympic athlete.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR...
SAMIA - We are looking for a Somali actress aged between 16 and 25 years old (Samia adolescent) and a Somali girl aged between 9 and 12 years old (young Samia). Both the actresses need to be skinny, speak Somali and possibly English.
While the other girls in school have resigned themselves to their fate of becoming wives and mothers, Samia dreams of following in the footsteps of famous Somali runner Mo Farah. Her determination, iron will and great self-discipline see her through years of tough training to participate in the Olympic Games.
ALI - We are looking for a Somali actor aged between 16 and 25 years old (Ali adolescent) and a Somali boy aged between 9 and 12 years old (young Ali). Both the actors need to speak Somali and possibly English.
Ali lives with his widowed father and two elder brothers in the same house as Samia, she is Ali’s closest friend and ally. They share everything and get along brilliantly. The only real bone of contention between them is the fact that Samia can run faster and wins every race. In the beginning, he tries to run faster and win races against her but eventually he realizes that he doesn’t have a chance. So, he decides to become her trainer. That way each of her victories is a victory for him, too.
YUSUF OMAR – We are looking for a Somali man aged between 40 and 50 years old, he needs to speak Somali and possibly English.
Yusuf is Samia’s father. He sells clothes on the market. Tall and strong in appearance, he is actually a very soft and loving man, Yusuf loves all his children and tries to foster their talents. It doesn’t matter to him whether they are girls or boys. Why would Allah have given girls, too, such impressive talents otherwise? He enjoys playing cards (scopa) with Yassin, and using old Italian sayings and expletives on each other.
HOOYO DAHABO – We are looking for a Somali woman aged between 40 and 50 years old, she needs to speak Somali and possibly English.
Hooyo is Samia’s mother. She is a tall, beautiful woman, but usually frowning. Now and again, she can’t suppress a sudden smile, and then her face positively radiates. She played basketball in school herself, so she completely understands Samia’s interest in running and does not see any reason to stop her.
HODAN - We are looking for a Somali girl aged between 13 and 20 years old, she needs to speak Somali and possibly English.
Hodan is Samia’s favourite sister. She is already 15 and almost grown-up.. After Ali, Hodan is the person Samia is most attached to. Hodan is interested in make-up, pretty clothes and all things feminine. She is a gifted singer and writes her own songs. Hodan sings so beautifully that their father often asks her to sing in the evenings by candlelight.
