Elena is a modern interpretation of the classic myth of Helen of Troy, freely inspired by the poems of Ghiannis Ritzos. A senior army officer, Franco Nero, leaves to meet a woman named Elena (Mita Medici). Through the streets of a contemporary big city, navigated by car, he relives the memories of the war. The meeting takes place in the ancient villa that Elena seems to have abandoned. Elena tells him about some of the events of her life, the tragedies of people who have died for her, the slow decay of her existence, up until the dramatic epilogue when the officer runs from the now empty house.
